Classes & Staff

FLEDGLINGS prides itself on being a small, friendly and happy school where personal attention is given to the children. This is achieved by a small, but dedicated and experienced staff, all of whom are qualified teachers.

All classes follow a programme of themes which are designed to equip the children with life skills – hence our motto “Learning for Life”.

The themes generally run for a week and begin with an introduction by the teacher, followed by group discussions and creative work.  Music and baking will also tie in with these themes. Children are encouraged to bring items for the interest table. Children are required to make their own objects in the older groups in order to develop their individual abilities.

Some of the themes include general interest topics, such as dinosaurs, outer space, hands, tails, paws and claws, computers, and concepts such as number work, spatial work and shapes. All areas of perception are constantly covered during the course of every lesson.

Music is included in the weekly programme which includes singing, percussion band, musical games, movement sessions and music appreciation. This all culminates in a Concert once a year. During the Fourth term we sing a number of Christmas carols and songs.

Baking is also part of our weekly programme and is eagerly anticipated by all the children.

There are three classes: -

Robins and Sparrows

Children from 2 & 3 year olds enjoy class room and playground facilities separate from the older children. Miss. Debbie Coldham, together with Ms. Ireen Sekhu, make this a happy and stable group. With their gentle manner and ability, they implement the school readiness programme even at this young age.

Weavers

Mrs. Muriel Coldham teaches the 4 & 5 year olds in this Grade 00 class and prepares them for the Grade R Pre-Primary group the following year.

Kingfishers / Grade R

This senior group of 5 to 6 year olds is prepared for Grade 1 at Primary Schools and taught by Miss Julia Coldham a qualified teacher who has taught at FLEDGLINGS for several years.  She is supported by a certified teacher of many years’ experience teaching Primary and Pre-Primary children, Mrs. Muriel Coldham.

The Grade R programme is comparable with that of well-known private schools and has often been complimented by Primary School teachers on the quality preparation the children have had for Primary School.

A number of well proven methods are used including the “Audiblox” system. “Audiblox” is a useful educational aid for improving learning skills and for remedial teaching.

Aftercare Teacher

In the afternoon the teachers take turns in supervising the children during lunch, rest time, free play and final collection at 18:00 hrs, the closing time for the day.

Other School Staff

FLEDGLINGS has a very capable Senior Helper, Ms. Dorris Masilo, who carries out many and varied duties- looking after children, cleaning, cooking and other responsibilities.

Staff Training

The teachers regularly attend refresher courses on topics of relevance to Pre-Primary children and also liaise with principals and teachers at Primary schools in our area, to ensure that the preparation is relevant.
